Giving sustainability communication a clear direction
Sustainability becomes part of an organisation’s positioning when objectives, decisions and communication follow a recognisable direction. Adding a few initiatives to the brand narrative is not enough: their role in relation to the business and stakeholder relationships needs to be clear.
We build communication strategies that connect sustainability priorities, commitments and results with the organisation’s overall positioning. We start with the company’s actual progress, available evidence and the issues that matter to its stakeholders.
Our remit is communication strategy, working with company contacts and the specialists responsible for the technical aspects of sustainability.
Connecting the company’s progress with external expectations
We review initiatives, stated objectives and published materials to understand how the organisation presents its commitment. With internal contacts, we distinguish achievements, ongoing activities and future ambitions, avoiding presenting them as equivalent.
We relate this assessment to the context, sector issues and the expectations of relevant stakeholders. We identify which topics need explanation, which can support positioning and which do not yet have a sufficient information base.
The aim is a credible, proportionate direction, not a promise of leadership built independently of demonstrable actions and progress.
Turning priorities into communication choices
A strategy clarifies what to communicate, to whom, with which evidence and in what sequence. We define narrative territories, messages and the role of different channels, connecting reports, the website, internal communication and stakeholder dialogue.
We agree responsibilities, review stages and the conditions required before publishing a claim. Questions requiring technical checks or specialist assessment go to the appropriate contacts, rather than being resolved through more appealing wording.
The roadmap also makes clear what needs to develop before it can be communicated. An area for improvement can be described clearly without being turned into a result already achieved.
When a shared direction is needed
The programme can support a new plan, revised positioning or the need to bring consistency to separate initiatives. It is useful when sustainability, management and communication teams hold different information and priorities and need to turn them into choices that the organisation and its stakeholders can understand. We can address these needs.
- Connect sustainability commitments with positioning and corporate communication.
- Define priorities and messages around objectives, results and available evidence.
- Bring consistency to reports, campaigns, digital content and internal communication.
- Clarify responsibilities and review stages across company functions and advisers.
- Build an updating process that follows the actual development of commitments.
How we build the strategy
-
01
Understand
We gather objectives, materials and information from company contacts. We review the sustainability journey and existing communication, clarifying audiences, context and the limits of available evidence.
-
02
Define
We identify priority topics, audiences and messages aligned with positioning. We agree criteria for distinguishing results, initiatives and future objectives, making points requiring further investigation explicit.
-
03
Design
We turn choices into an editorial and engagement roadmap. We define activities, channels, responsibilities and reviews, coordinating the work with company projects and the advisers involved.
-
04
Review and update
We assess communication consistency and clarity using agreed indicators. We update messages and priorities when evidence, commitments or expectations change, rather than treating the strategy as a final document.
A framework for consistent decisions
The work may include an analysis of existing communication, a topic and stakeholder map, message architecture, editorial guidelines and an activation roadmap. We can support internal workshops and define coordination arrangements across functions.
The scope is agreed with the organisation: we do not replace the technical definition of environmental or social objectives, regulatory assessments or specialist checks. Communication recommendations are based on information confirmed by those with the appropriate responsibilities.
The result is a practical reference that helps decide what to communicate and how, keeping the relationship between commitments, actions and results clear.
