Advanced Media Monitoring

From the news flow to the information that matters

Understanding how the context is evolving takes more than collecting everything that is published. It requires a system that selects relevant information and makes it usable for decision-makers.

We build monitoring programmes to track and analyse media, the web and information sources relevant to organisations, brands and strategic topics over time. We connect evidence gathering with interpretation, defining the scope and information-sharing arrangements around the needs of the project.

Relevance before volume

A very extensive news roundup can obscure the most important stories rather than highlight them. We start with the subjects, markets and issues that affect the organisation to develop consistent selection criteria.

We assess news content, the role of sources, the messages being repeated and the relationships between different pieces of coverage. Where useful, we distinguish original publications from subsequent reproductions rather than treating every item as an independent signal.

The analysis helps explain not only how much attention a topic receives, but how it is being presented and what the implications may be.

Agreed sources, timing and criteria

We agree sources, languages, keywords, reporting frequency and alert criteria with the client. The scope can include media and websites and, where relevant, accessible public social content. Actual coverage depends on source availability and the access arrangements included in the project.

Monitoring does not mean detecting every publication everywhere. Operating arrangements and response times are explicitly agreed: alerts do not automatically imply a round-the-clock operational service. This clarity helps establish realistic expectations and sustainable workflows.

When structured monitoring is useful

A programme can meet ongoing needs or support a specific phase. The starting point is to establish which developments require attention, who needs to know about them and which decisions the evidence can support.

  • Tracking media coverage of the organisation, its spokespeople and its most significant initiatives.
  • Understanding how strategic topics, sectors and competitive contexts are evolving.
  • Observing coverage of a launch, an event or a communication programme.
  • Identifying news and signals that call for reputational assessment or further investigation.
  • Sharing selected information with management, communication teams and other relevant functions.
  • Comparing coverage over time through criteria and indicators aligned with the objectives.

How we organise monitoring

  1. 01

    Define priorities

We identify the objectives, intended users and areas to observe. We establish which subjects and topics are central, which require particular attention and how the information should support the organisation’s work. We agree the scope before collection begins.

  2. 02

    Set up and verify

We build searches and classification criteria around the available sources. We review an initial set of results, correct ambiguities and irrelevant content, and define rules for distinguishing topics, subjects and types of coverage.

  3. 03

    Select and flag

We organise the evidence into information flows and reports that are useful to their recipients. News meeting the agreed criteria can be flagged separately, with the context needed to assess it. An alert supports a decision but does not replace management of the potential issue.

  4. 04

    Analyse and update

We examine how topics, messages and coverage evolve over the observation period. We share the most significant findings and update the system as priorities or the context change, documenting adjustments that may affect the comparability of results.

Usable information, not just a collection

The work can include curated news roundups, periodic reports, coverage analysis, competitive comparisons and investigations into specific topics or events. We define indicators around the questions to be addressed, distinguishing media presence, message quality and potential reputational implications.

Where the project calls for it, we combine monitoring with Social Media Listening and strategic advice. The aim is to give teams an intelligible evidence base that guides further investigation and priorities without confusing the number of publications with the overall effectiveness of communication.
